If you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy situation, you may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure of what to do next. One of the first questions many women ask is: When should I take a pregnancy test?

At Options for Women, we provide free pregnancy testing in a confidential, welcoming environment. If you qualify, limited ultrasounds are also available and performed by a registered nurse. You don’t have to sort through uncertainty alone.

When Is the Best Time to Take a Test?

For the most accurate results, it’s usually best to wait until after your missed period before taking a pregnancy test.

If your cycle is regular, waiting one to two days after your missed period can improve accuracy.

If your cycle is irregular or you’re unsure when your period is due, it’s generally recommended to wait about three weeks after intercourse before testing. This gives your body time to produce enough pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), for the test to detect.

Pregnancy tests work by detecting hCG, which your body begins producing after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterus and the placenta starts to form. In early pregnancy, hCG rises quickly, often doubling about every 48 to 72 hours. Testing too early can sometimes lead to a false negative even if you are pregnant.

If you’ve already taken a home test and feel unsure about the result, coming in for free testing with our registered nurse can provide clearer information and a chance to talk through your next steps.

What Are Early Signs of Pregnancy?

Every woman’s experience is different, but early pregnancy symptoms may include:

  • Tender or swollen breasts
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Mood changes
  • Bloating
  • Sensitivity to smells

Symptoms alone don’t necessarily mean you’re pregnant, but they can signal that it’s time for testing.

What About Ultrasounds?

After receiving a positive pregnancy test at our center, we can discuss whether an ultrasound may be available for you.

An ultrasound can provide important information about how far along you may be, whether the pregnancy appears to be developing within the uterus, and whether a heartbeat is detectable. This helps assess viability and may indicate whether the pregnancy appears to be progressing or if there are signs of possible miscarriage.

An ultrasound can also help identify if the pregnancy may be located outside the uterus, such as in an ectopic pregnancy, which often occurs in a fallopian tube. Because ectopic pregnancies can rupture and cause internal bleeding, they require immediate medical attention.
