Whether in college or finishing high school, your life is filled with books to read, tests to take, and social activities. Throw an unexpected pregnancy into the mix, and you are most likely completely overwhelmed.

We get it. Being in school and pregnant isn’t easy, but it also isn’t impossible.

Protection Through Title IX

The federal government fully protects pregnant and parenting students from discrimination through Title IX.

Here are a few of your rights through Title IX:

  • Your school must allow you to continue participating in classes and extracurricular activities despite pregnancy.
  • You must be given excused absences due to pregnancy or childbirth for as long as your doctor says it is necessary.
  • You must be allowed to return to the same academic and extracurricular status as before your medical leave began.
  • Your school must provide you with reasonable adjustments, such as a larger desk and elevator access, or allow you to make frequent trips to the bathroom.
  • Your school must protect you from harassment.
