“I am pregnant.” Who knew three little words could turn your world totally upside down?

If your partner recently told you she thinks she is pregnant, you are most likely overwhelmed with emotion. Anger, disbelief, fear, and sadness could be just some of the emotions you are feeling.

Although we are called Options for Women, we have options for you, too. Here’s some advice if you are wondering about your next steps.

Schedule a Free and Confidential Appointment

Before making any decisions, it’s essential to confirm her pregnancy. A positive pregnancy test only indicates the possibility of pregnancy.

Your partner needs an ultrasound to confirm if the pregnancy is viable (growing) or if she’s had a miscarriage. Plus, an ultrasound tells her how far along she is and if the pregnancy is safely located in her uterus (if not, it could be a life-threatening health concern).

Making an appointment is easy. All services are free and completely confidential.

Tips for Moving Forward

Here are a few suggestions for things you should and shouldn’t do.

Do:

  • Escort her to her doctor’s appointments.
  • Support her physically and emotionally.
  • Learn about all of your options.
  • Encourage her to talk about how she feels and what she’s thinking.
  • Share your thoughts on the pregnancy and options.
  • Come to prenatal, childbirth, and parenting classes with her if she chooses.

Don’t:

  • Do not say, “Just do whatever you want.”
  • Avoid responsibility.
  • Shut down and refuse to speak with her.
  • Run away or “ghost” her.
